CLIMATE CHANGE WREAKS HAVOC IN MALAWI

In recent years, Malawi, a small landlocked country in southeastern Africa, has been facing increasingly severe impacts of climate change. From prolonged droughts to erratic rainfall patterns and devastating floods, the effects of climate changing are becoming more pronounced, posing significant challenges to the country's economy, environment, and people.

One of the most pressing issues facing Malawi is the impact of prolonged droughts on agricultural productivity. As a predominantly agrarian society, Malawi relies heavily on rain-fed agriculture for food security and livelihoods. However, inconsistent and insufficient rainfall has led to crop failures, food shortages, and increased vulnerability to poverty for many Malawians.

In addition to droughts, Malawi has also experienced extreme weather events, such as flash floods and cyclones, which have caused widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure, and farmland. Climate changes has affected young people academically and it has resulted into high illiteracy. It is so just because, most parents loose their property and becomes a challenge to source resources required for education. These disasters not only result in immediate losses but also have long-term consequences for communities, particularly in terms of displacement, food insecurity, and disease outbreaks. It takes time for affected people to restore economically. Some of the diseases that came following disaster mentioned include; Hepatitis, leptospirosis. Diarrheal diseases such as cholera and dysentery are among the most common water-borne diseases affecting natural disaster victims. Disaster like cyclones Freddy, Ana and others also brought psychological problems. It becomes a huge challenge more especially to youths and it takes time for them to cope up with the incidence. Deaths also have negative impact to children when their guardias In 2023, over 500 people died due to cyclone Freddy. It is indeed loss of human resource to the community, Nation and globally at large.

Furthermore, the changing climate has exacerbated existing challenges in Malawi, such as deforestation, soil degradation, and water scarcity. These environmental issues, coupled with climate change, create a vicious cycle of vulnerability and poverty, making it difficult for Malawi to achieve sustainable development and resilience to future shocks.

Despite these challenges, Malawi is taking steps to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. The government, in partnership with international organizations and local communities, has been implementing various initiatives aimed at building resilience, promoting sustainable land management, and enhancing early warning systems for disasters.

For instance, sustainable agriculture practices, such as conservation farming and crop diversification, are being promoted to help farmers adapt to changing climatic conditions and improve their It also helps in land conservation which reduces incidence of climate change.Additionally, reforestation efforts and water management projects are being implemented to restore ecosystems and enhance natural resource conservation. Planted trees hold water during rainy season and lowers run-off and at the same time reduces splash erosion. Carbon dioxide can also be absorbed by these trees and eventually reduces global warming which is responsible for skin diseases. Reforestation must be seriously considered and taken with full effort using policies.

Educational campaigns and capacity-building programs are also being conducted to raise awareness about climate change and build adaptive skills among vulnerable communities. By empowering people with knowledge and resources, Malawi is striving to build a more resilient society that can withstand the challenges of a changing climate. Government Organisations and non-governmental organisations should be on fore front in spreading the massage about climate change particularly addressing them on causes, negative impact and mitigation of climate change. It must be fully highlighted that taking care of our environment should be at heart of every citizen if nation is aiming at controlling the climate change. Community leaders, Churches and other stakeholders must come together and work as one as there is power in unity.

However, despite these efforts, more support and investment are needed to address the root causes of climate change and ensure sustainable development in Malawi. International cooperation, financial assistance, technology transfer, and policy reforms are crucial for building a climate-resilient future for the country and its people. On other hand trees planted can also be part of business so that citizens can have a chance of harvesting these trees and plant again so that as they are mitigating the challenges exerted by climate change, they must also get some benefits

Climate change is a pressing issue that requires urgent attention and action in Malawi. By addressing the impacts of a changing climate, promoting sustainable practices, and building adaptive capacity, Malawi can navigate the challenges ahead and secure a more prosperous and resilient future for all its citizens.
